Garrett Barry, an influential blind piper from Inagh, County Clare, was born into an Irish-speaking community in 1847, at the height of the Great Famine. Due to famine-related malnutrition and illness, he lost his sight, but found the opportunity to earn his livelihood by dedicating himself to the uilleann pipes.
