The earliest known appearance of the tune is in the Leonard-Kernan Manuscript (1844–c.1850, Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford), where it is titled Tip it Off. It appears under the same name in the c.1883 music manuscript of County Leitrim fiddler Stephen Greir (MS 14, No. 16). Researcher Conor Ward observes that this tune was very popular in counties Leitrim and Longford, appearing in local manuscripts across several generations of fiddle players.
