An Phis Fhliuch

Also known as “The Choice Wife” and “O’Farrell’s Welcome to Limerick,” this tune has a colorful history. “The Choice Wife” is the polite translation used by piper Willie Clancy in place of its original, more obscene title. Under the name “O’Farrell’s Welcome to Limerick,” the tune is attributed to O’Farrell, an Irish uilleann piper based in London who published three significant collections of Irish music between 1797 and 1810. He was also the first to publish a tutor for the improved uilleann pipes. The melody also appears under the title “Pis Fliuc” in the manuscripts of George Petrie, who noted it from a collection by Patrick Carew, an early 19th-century uilleann piper from County Cork.
