The alternate title “The Planting Stick” arises from a dance once performed in the Province of Connacht, in which people pantomimed planting cabbages or potatoes using a stick. In English morris dancing, a similar idea survives in the dance “Bean Setting,” while the County Galway fiddler Martin Byrnes called the tune “Hitler’s Downfall.”
