A popular session tune by fiddler Tommy Coen (1910–1974) from Urrachree, Aughrim, East County Galway. Coen later lived in Salthill and worked as a Connemara bus conductor. Legend has it that a local céilí band leader, feuding with Coen, introduced the reel on a holiday radio broadcast as “Christmas Eve” to spite him. It remains unclear whether Coen himself had a different title.
