Farewell to Connaught
Categories: ,

“Farewell to Connacht” was initially published by O’Neill in Waifs and Strays of Gaelic Melody (1922, p. 329). According to Breathnach (1985), the title “Maid of Erin (The)” is associated with County Leitrim. The melody bears a resemblance to both “The Colliers” and “The Ravelled Hank of Yarn.” Frankie Gavin has remarked that the tune was not recorded until the LP era in the late 1960s. One of its earliest recordings was by the old Tulla Céilí Band, who included it in a medley with “Ballinasloe Fair.”
