Versions of the tune vary significantly in tonality, ranging from major to mixolydian, dorian, and even minor modes, with the number of parts also differing widely. The title of this Jacobite reel alludes to Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Scottish pretender, who was also briefly seen as an Irish hope. Gearoid Ó hAllmhurain, for example, suggests that “Jenny” may refer to Jean Cameron, the reputed mistress of Prince Charlie. While two women named Jean or Jenny Cameron were involved in the 1745 Rising, the notion that Jenny led the Camerons into battle and had a romantic relationship with Prince Charlie appears to have been a fabrication of Whig propaganda.
