“The Bottle of Wine” is an alternate title for this tune, which was collected by Breathnach from P. O’Loughlin of Largy, Miltown Malbay, County Clare. It is also related to the tune known as “Kilbride’s Favourite.” The version widely known today was first recorded in 1923 by uilleann piper Tom Ennis and Sligo fiddler James Morrison, with pianist John Muller accompanying. It gained further popularity through a celebrated recording by Michael Coleman in the 1930s. It’s worth noting that the title “The Kid on the Mountain” predates these recordings but originally referred to a different tune, one recorded in 1898 by piper Dinney Delaney.
