Miss Monaghan
Category:

“Miss Monaghan’s” is one variant in a broad family of closely related reels that share melodic motifs and overall structure. The earliest known appearances of the tune under this name can be found in the mid-19th century manuscript collection of James Goodman (1828–1896), a Church of Ireland cleric, Irish speaker, and uilleann piper. Goodman collected tunes from oral tradition in County Cork and across Munster, as well as from manuscripts and printed sources. “Miss Monaghan’s” appears in Volume 1 (p. 42) of his collection, and a partial version—titled “Miss Manahan’s [sic] Reel”—is found in Volume 5, within a section dedicated to pipe tunes.
