“The Sligo Maid” is a widely played session reel of relatively recent origin, though it shares numerous melodic features with “The Rainy Day” suggesting a possible relationship between the two tunes. A variant from Prince Edward Island is known as “Old Peter’s Reel.”
While it has been claimed that the Scottish counterpart to this tune is “Down the Broom,” the latter is, in fact, an Irish reel—despite its Scottish-sounding title. There are noticeable melodic similarities between “The Sligo Maid” and “Down the Broom” in both parts of the tune, though whether they are truly cognate remains open to interpretation.
