White Petticoat (The)

One of the few tunes in O’Neill’s collection set in the Aeolian mode—where most “minor” tunes of that era lean toward the Dorian mode—this piece stands out both for its tonal flavor and uncertain origin. Numerous commentators have pointed to its uniqueness compared to the bulk of O’Neill’s repertoire. Although the tune is credited to Francis O’Neill himself, the attribution is far from definitive. O’Neill often put his name to tunes he had absorbed over years of sharing and performing music with Irish communities in Chicago and beyond, so the precise source of this particular melody remains elusive.
